Ridge Course challenging but not crazy

The 18-hole Ridge Course at The Nottawasaga Inn Resort dares golfers to take on the natural challenges of forests, the ridge and the river. Director of Golf and Grounds Operations Ron Heesen says it’s “challenging but not crazy hard.” A second 27-hole course provides a different experience entirely.
Backed up by the extensive non-golfing facilities of the Nottawasaga Inn Resort, the time spent on course may be just one component of a visit to this Alliston attraction. But the courses are in no way an afterthought. “Forty-five holes of golf are served out of two outlets,” explains Ron Heesen, director of golf and grounds operation. “Twenty-seven are around the main resort, and 18 are at The Ridge.” Built within the last eight years, The Ridge Course is a highly challenging par 71. Carts are always required on this 6,650-yard course. As it winds through a pine forest, the course makes its way up and down the ridge along the Nottawasaga River. As a result, dramatic elevation changes and undulating greens become key considerations in many shots. The river itself also comes into play. With a resort of this size, perhaps it isn’t surprising to find two signature holes on one course. The 16th and 17th greens require skillful navigation across the river in order to be reached within their par four and three (respectively) guidelines. “Its very scenic and challenging all at the same time,” says Heesen. Each tee has been set up with three sets of blocks so “all levels of golfer can enjoy the course,” he adds. Play culminates on a five-par 18th hole that is open, rugged and challenging. After a round, golfers don’t have to go back to the resort to wind down. “We have our own pro shop and food outlet at The Ridge,” says the director. Over on the Nottawasaga course, golfers can customize their own play. Choosing among the Green Briar 9, the Valley 9, and the Briar Hill 9, players can chose two to make up their game, or opt for a shorter day and choose any one. Parents with children sometimes elect to use the forward-most of the three tee blocks on this course. “We’re appropriate to all makes, sizes and abilities,” says Heesen. “And because we have the 45 holes, we really have quite a variety of golfers.” In addition to separate clubhouses, each course also has its own driving ranges and practice facilities. Teaching professionals on staff offer lessons and clinics for those wanting to improve their game. The Nottawasaga welcomes resort guests, tournament participants, green-fee players and members onto its courses. Annual members join for the privilege of unlimited play on both courses. Tournament and corporate packages can be arranged with the help of resort staff from beginning to end. Group rates are available for overnight guests. The resort has 269 guest rooms available in various sizes and amenities. A selection of catering options, including barbeque dinner packages, can be arranged to fit any event. The three restaurants on site, which offer everything from casual fare to fine dining, can be incorporated as well. Spa services and sports options (there are two full-sized rinks on site) are two more the many options available when coordinating an event. Children haven’t been forgotten either. In addition of more traditional methods, the tropical pool can be accessed by a beach entry area or via the 100-foot water slide. Children’s programming is also scheduled regularly in the main resort. For more information, call 705-435-5504.
