Customers will notice a small change in their shopping experience at participating A&P, Dominion, Ultra Food & Drug, the Barn, Loeb and Food Basics stores this summer.

For the second year in a row, the company is dimming store lights by up to 50 per cent in an effort to reduce power consumption and relieve pressure on Ontario’s power grid.

“We are committed to minimizing our impact on the environment through many initiatives including dimming our store lights,” said Vince Bertrand, conventional operations, A&P Canada.

“By dimming the lights in our stores across Ontario this summer we are helping improve Ontario’s air quality.”

Barrie has a new independent wealth management firm – ValueTrend. The company was established by Keith G. Richards.

“After some 20 years of working with a large bank-owned investment firm as vice president and portfolio manager, I left the bank to start a completely independent wealth-management firm,” he noted in a media statement.

“ValueTrend is not actually a new name in the business – I trademarked the process 15 years ago and ran an independent program within the bank for the past 15 years. I’ve taken that process to the next level through an independent business platform.”

Richards says he is one of only 73 individuals in the country who holds the Chartered Market Technician (CMT) designation- a specialized area of money management. He adds that his firm’s independence makes it free to work without having to adhere to overriding corporate agendas.

Due to an increased demand in the recreational boating industry for qualified employees, the Ontario Marine Operators Association (OMOA) has created $15,000 worth of awards and scholarships for students enrolling in the Mechanical Techniques – Marine Engine Mechanic program for September 2008.

Ten scholarships worth $1,000 each will be available to new students who begin their studies this fall. An additional $5,000 in awards is also available to graduating students.

In recent years, the marine industry has experienced a decline in qualified skilled workers.

The demand for employees has created new career opportunities for Georgian College graduates entering the marine industry. This has prompted Georgian to relocate the program to the new Recreational Boating Centre of Excellence at the Midland Campus.

The recently upgraded skilled trades facility features state-of-the-art equipment and educational resources such as computer labs for optimum learning capabilities. Opportunities for graduating students are abundant within the marine industry, said Al Donaldson, Executive Director of the OMOA.

“For every graduate from the Georgian Marine Engine Mechanic program, approximately 10 job openings are available,” said Donaldson.

To apply for one of the OMOA entrance scholarships, contact the Awards and Scholarship office at Georgian College at (705) 728-1968, ext 1211.
