Barrie photographer John Bartosik, owner of JB Photoworks and a professional commercial photographer, has recently been awarded top spot in the ‘Conceptual Series’ category for the Applied Arts magazine annual competition.

“His winning entry is a new body of work in progress; a series of fine art photography titled Rock of Ages, depicting the pre-Cambrian shield in the Georgian Bay area with interpretive form.”

Bartosik will be featured in the May/June annual awards issue, have a presence on the magazine website for a year and all winning work will be displayed at the Awards Winners’ Exhibition in Toronto. (Date and Location TBA.) Click the link for his website.

Orillia-based Hardy Stevenson and Associates has announced that Jeffery Holec has been appointed director central Ontario for the firm.  Hardy Stevenson is comprised of public consultation practitioners, social scientists, land use and environmental planners, communications specialists, facilitators and engineers.

“Due to extensive growth pressure in central Ontario and related planning, environmental and social issues, we have made a commitment to establish a presence in this area,” said Dave Hardy in a media statement.

The 2008 edition of the Business Directory, produced by Metroland North Media, was included in a recent edition of the newsletter produced by the Southern Georgian Bay Chamber of Commerce. It provides contact information for the region’s manufacturing, professional, tourism and other sectors.

Area businesses are encouraged to purchase tickets for the June 20 Party on the Dock event by the Rotary Club of Midland. Proceeds from the event, which will feature two bands (including the Jimmy Buffet tribute band Northern Harbour), will support the Huronia Hospitals Foundation and Community Living Huronia. HGR lawyers recently welcomed Paul Peterson and Kellie Beasley to its roster. Peterson practiced for 10 years in Toronto before joining the Midland office, while Beasley comes to the firm’s Orillia office from stints in Regina and Calgary.

A last-ditch effort to derail the proposed Town Square II site plan was heard by New Tecumseth council committee recently. Both Wayne Hutchinson and Kevin Kemp raised concerns over parking. Kemp said Town Square II will negatively impact the municipal parking lot at the corner Wellington and Centre Streets, with spaces being taken up by employees from the new building, rather than customers for downtown merchants.

A public meeting to hear planning details and public comments about an $11-million commercial development instead turned into a debate championing the protection of heritage buildings in Innisfil.

Residents are urging the mayor and council to preserve McConkey farmhouse where it stands, on a 10-acre parcel at the southeast corner of Innisfil Beach Road and the 20th Sideroad. It’s at that site that Trinity Development wants to construct a Canadian Tire store and four other retail buildings.

Trinity planner David McKay said the firm is willing to move the building free of charge and noted that the project would create 270 jobs and $300,000 in annual tax revenues.

Collingwood’s revamped Loblaws store at 12 Hurontario St. has been rebranded, Loblaw Great Foods. The store is one of three in the province to carry the new name.

Mark’s Work Wearhouse hosted its ‘Clothes that work for the cause’ fundraiser on May 1. From 5 p.m. until closing on that day, the company donated $5 to the Breast Cancer Society of Canada for every purchase made over $65. The company hopes to raise $250,000 across Ontario.

On May 10, the 20th-annual M&M Meat Shops fundraiser, in support of crohn’s and colitis research, will be held at all stores. Burgers and hot dogs will be barbecued and be offered with a drink and chips for a minimum donation of $2.50.

Barrie’s Schmidt and Shaw Auto Sales is contributing to the I Believe campaign, in support of the regional cancer centre, throughout April. For every customer who buys a vehicle and chooses an extra-value package, Schmidt and Shaw will donate $200 to the centre.

The store had raised about $1,600 by mid-April. “I don’t know anyone that is not touched in some way by cancer,” said sales manager Steve Weston. “We wanted to help the cause.”

 A group of workers at Barrie’s Valmont West Coast Engineering plant recently received their cheques from the Ontario Lottery Corp. Twenty-seven people have received their share of the $24.5-million prize, though claims by an additional five people have still to be determined.
